Are Jack Russell Terriers Fast [Shockingly Quick & Strong]

Jack Russell Terriers often surprise new owners with their unique athletic ability, strength, and yes, speed.

Most individuals may be aware that Jack Russell’s can get up and move quickly, but often individuals want to know if a Jack Russell is considered one of the faster dog breeds.

Are Jack Russell Terriers Fast?

I have owned a Jack Russell for the past few years, and here is what I can tell you on this topic.

Jack Russell Terriers are fast. Jack Russell’s are one of the fastest dog breeds. Jack Russell’s can reach speeds of 25 mph or 40.25 KPH. Jack Russell’s, due to being smaller are less capable of sustaining speeds of 25 mph like some larger fast dog breeds.

The rest of this post is designed to be entertaining while presenting some fun facts about Jack Russell’s speed, quickness, and athleticism.

In addition, we will do a quick comparison of a Jack Russell’s speed compared to some of the other fastest dog breeds in the world.

Here is an outline of what will be presented today:

Jack Russell Terrier’s are one of the most athletic dog breeds that you can adopt and often under-rated for their physical strength, endurance, and speed.

Yes, Jack Russell Terriers are extremely fast.

I have been able to witness this firsthand when Luna (2-Year-Old Jack Russell) and Graham (7-Year-Old Yellow Lab) run laps together in the back yard.

She makes him look silly with her speed and can run a full lap around him in most situations.

Mainly because she can slow herself down and accelerate on a moment’s notice.

As mentioned at the beginning of this post, Jack Russell Terriers can reach speeds up to 25 mph or 40 KPH.

One thing to remember, however, is that Jack Russell’s with their short legs, will run out of endurance at high speeds faster than a larger dog with longer legs such as a Greyhound.

Here is a quick look at how a Jack Russell Terrier stacks up against a few other dog breeds that would be considered faster than many dogs.

Jack Russell’s Are Fast Enough to Make for Great Running Companions

One of the things that I love about a Jack Russell and the speed they possess is their unique ability to make a great running companion.

Most of us will never be running with a Jack Russell faster than 8-12 mph for any long duration of time.

Due to the speed and strength a Jack Russell has, they can easily keep up with this speed and cadence.

However, it is still essential for you to ensure they remain hydrated and are provided a break during a long run if they begin to seem tired or fatigued during the run.

Nonetheless, with the proper running gear and some discipline, a Jack Russell can become a superior running partner relatively quickly.

Jack Russell’s Need to Use Their Speed for Good Use and Exercise

When it comes to a dog that can use their speed and athleticism for good use, it is also essential to understand that a Jack Russell tends to get bored and restless.

This often is the result of neglect or a lack of training.

Here is the crucial thing to remember if you intend to pick up a Jack Russell Terrier from a local breeder near you anytime soon.

If you do not use their speed and athleticism for good use, they can often use these unique traits against you.

This could be in the form of rapid digging in the backyard or plotting an escape to get out of the fence.

Or, even worse, that speed and quickness they have may be used against you if they do get out the yard forcing you to chase them around the neighborhood while they run away from you.

The point I am trying to make is simple.

Make sure that you take advantage of your Jack Russell’s athletic ability and willingness to learn for constructive activities.

This can be a wide range of activities that include the following:

  • Walking
  • Swimming
  • Fetch
  • Tug of War
  • Acting as A Working Dog

The more you allow a Jack Russell to do and the more they can use their intelligence in constructive ways, the more enjoyable the next 13-17 years are going to be for you.

Not to mention, it is going to do wonders towards keeping them healthy, in shape, and happy.

Be Sure to Plan for The Speed A Jack Russell Terrier Possesses

I know we likely have two kinds of readers reading this post.

Likely, we have some of you who are simply curious about how fast a Jack Russell is, or we have some of you who are truly intending on adopting a Jack Russell Terrier now or in the future.

If you are one of the individuals who plan to adopt a Jack Russell in the future, be sure to plan ahead.

Have an area for them to play outside and interact safely without the possibility of running away.

Find a way to make some time in your schedule to provide them exercise and stimulation to keep them calmer for the rest of the day.

Find fun ways to be active with your Jack Russell and to use their speed in positive ways.

The more planning you do in this respect, the better and the easier your job is going to be.

Jack Russell Terriers May Be Fast, but They Are Also Excellent Loving Pets

A Jack Russell is undoubtedly fast, and yes, they are one of the quickest dogs that exist.

However, this is only one physical or personality characteristics of the Jack Russell Terrier.

Jack Russell’s are filled with personality and energy and need a home that can show love and attention.

Luna and I wish you the best of luck if you decide to adopt a Jack Russell and the journey ahead of you.
