If you plan to adopt a Jack Russell Terrier soon or recently did adopt a Jack Russell Terrier, a quality fence, or some way to contain your Jack Russell needs to be a priority.

This is a dog that is full of energy and will find a way to navigate out of the yard if left unattended with no fence.

Do not worry. I will touch on tactics you can use to end this behavior. Still, nonetheless, a fence is a significant consideration you need to have in mind.

The rest of this post will break down what I would consider your best fence options if you own a Jack Russell and secondary options that you can consider.

Here is how I intend to break down this topic for you:

Why Jack Russell Terriers Need A Quality Fence

Before you rush to purchase some form of a portable fence or even have a fence installed in your yard, it is good to know why it is essential for a Jack Russell Terrier.

So here is the deal.

Technically, you could get away without a fence for your Jack Russell if you want to keep your Jack Russell on a lead when in the yard.

Still, if the budget allows, I advise against this.

Jack Russell’s need the ability to run and exercise.

They need to burn off some of that access energy.

While you can undoubtedly exercise with your Jack Russell without using a fence, it is still a nice luxury to have.

Maybe you want to put your Jack Russell Terrier out back for a few minutes while you tidy up the house or just need a break in general.

A quality fence that your Jack Russell will not escape can be a real sanity saver in these situations.

You also need to keep in mind that Jack Russell’s are known to be good at two things.

Jumping.

And Digging.

Digging and jumping are common with Jack Russell Terriers

I do want to make one thing clear.

Digging and jumping is common with a new Jack Russell Terrier, but I do not want anyone reading to think these are forever behaviors.

It is 100% percent possible to train a Jack Russell to stop these troublesome behaviors with discipline.

Discipline and consistency.

Nonetheless, when considering your fence options for a Jack Russell, it is essential to know that they are strong-willed, strong-bodied, and know-how to navigate the structure to get to the destination they prefer.

Part of this is because they were initially bred to hunt fox by burrowing and digging through tunnels underground.

It is in their DNA to navigate rough terrain and needs to be in the back of your mind.

With all the considerations we have mentioned thus far into the post, I want to start diving into what I would consider the best fences for a Jack Russell Terrier.

Keep in mind that the fences being shown in this post are assuming you do not have a fenced-in yard.

Clearly, if that is the case, you have no need for a secondary enclosure or a fence for your Jack Russell.

While the option is a bit more costly, it is still the best fence option for a Jack Russell Terrier based on the size and construction.

The Giantex is rust-proof and water-resistant and comes equipped with stakes for the ground to secure the fence/playpen in place for your Jack Russell.

Remember, these dogs love to dig, so having this option is excellent.

This also has a double door entry and can be folded down and stored or moved if necessary.

Again, while relatively pricier than some of the other fences or playpens, it is large and durable. The best replacement option you can use as a substitute for a regular fenced in yard for a Jack Russell Terrier.

Keep in mind that you also have other sizing options for this fence and playpen.

Tailor it to fit your space for your Jack Russell.

Pros

😉Large Space

😉Durable Construction

😉Good Height For Containing a Jack Russell’s Jumping Ability

😉Portable

Cons

😟Relatively Bulky For Small Yard

This option can save you a few bucks, and I am a fan of this fence/playpen option for your Jack Russell. Still, I do not like the rounded structure as much as my number 1 recommendation above.

However, this option still includes the double doors, stakes for the grounds, and a rust-proof and water-resistant design.

Pros

😉Good Size

😉Budget Friendly

😉Solid Construction

Cons

😟Slightly Smaller Than Other Options

This is the most budget-friendly fencing option I would consider purchasing for a Jack Russell Terrier.

It still has the right size, including 16 metal panels, and has an easy access door for entry.

It can easily fold down and stored and is ideal for dogs that measure up to a Jack Russell’s size, with it’s 40 inches of height.

Pros

😉Portable

😉Weather Resistant

😉Easily Collapses

Cons

😟Smallest Of The Options For Running Around For Your Jack Russell

Best Electric Fence Options for Jack Russell Terriers

Now that we know what options we have for using a physical fence/pen for your Jack Russell Terrier, I also want to cover the best options you can consider or the best electric fence options for a Jack Russell Terrier.

If you work with your Jack Russell Terrier to understand the boundaries of the yard, a good electric fence can be a great way to keep your Jack Russell contained in your yard and not running the streets.

Here are my top votes for the best electric fences for Jack Russell Terriers.

This is a budget-friendly option for a good, reliable in-ground electric dog fence.

It can cover up to 1/3 of an acre and includes 500 feet of wire.

I like that additional wire up to 5 acres can be purchased for those of you with a more sizeable yard.

2. Pet Safe Stubborn Dog (Compact Wireless Fence)

This is very similar to the first option, except this electric dog fence will use an adjustable circular range of 3/4 acres of land and does not require the physical wire to be used.

This electric fence also can allow you to use up to 5 levels of correction for your Jack Russell Terrier.

Overall, a good option with the easier install for not much additional cost.

3. Sport Dog in Ground Fence

The Sport Dog in-ground fence for your Jack Russell Terrier is going to cover 1.3 acres of land and a rechargeable collar for your Jack Russell.

The collar is waterproof up to 25 feet, making rainy days or playing in the snow a non-issue.

I also love that this electric fence option for your Jack Russell is backed by a 2-year warranty.

Using A Shock Collar to Control Boundaries in The Yard with A Jack Russell

Another alternative that you have for your Jack Russell Terrier that somewhat falls into the fencing category is to use a good shock/vibrate collar for your Jack Russell Terrier.

This may not be as ideal as having a fenced-in backyard, one of the portable fencing options, or the electric fence option, but it is certainly still an option to consider.

It will also be cheaper.

The most significant downfall to this method is that it would require your supervision much more than using a portable fence for your Jack Russell or the electric fence for your Jack Russell method.

However, if you do not mind being outside while your Jack Russell is outside going potty or just running around, it can still be a good option to ensure that they remain in the yard.

If this is the route you ultimately decide to take, I highly recommend using this specific shock collar for your Jack Russell:

It is currently the shock collar I use for both my Jack Russell Terrier and my 90 lb. Yellow Labrador.

It works great, it is incredibly budget-friendly, and it can control two dogs at the same time if you wish.

It is also for the price, shockingly durable, and does an outstanding job.

I would, however, recommend that you educate yourself about the best methods you can use to ensure you are using this device or “shock collar” ethically with your Jack Russell Terrier.

Nonetheless, if we are on a topic of fences and containment options for the hyper Jack Russell breed, I can say firsthand that this alternative would work for you, and I would recommend considering it.

Using the Best Fences for Jack Russell’s Is Imperative

Listen, a Jack Russell Terrier absolutely needs a fence to remain contained in the yard without a lead.

Trust me, this is coming from someone with a fenced in yard and someone who has been raising a Jack Russell for the past 2 years.

If you follow the recommendations laid out for you in this post today, you will have no issues with your Jack Russell Terrier.

Luna and I wish you the best of luck with your new Jack Russell Terrier’s and hope whatever fencing option you ultimately choose for your Jack Russell works out great!
